Am I exempt from part of the education requirement?
Licensed mortgage brokers are required to complete a 40-hour Mortgage Broker Licensing Education Course and complete a 100-question test prior to January 1, 2009. Persons who have obtained their CML might qualify for an exemption to a portion of those requirements.

Step One:
- Check this list to see if your company is a member with CMLA.
- If your company IS a member of CMLA, proceed to Step 2.
- MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED FOR EXEMPTION STATUS.
Non member companies may become CMLA members. If your company is NOT a member, you can click here to download the application.
Step Two:
- Check this list to see if you have a current Certified Mortgage Lender (CML) designation.
- If you have a CURRENT CML, Proceed to Step 3.
- CML DESIGNATION IS REQUIRED FOR EXEMPTION STATUS.
Non-CML persons may become Certified Mortgage Lenders.
Step Three:
- If you have BOTH - a Certified Mortgage Lender designation AND are a CMLA member - you qualify for the 20.5 hour exemption status.
Education Providers
CMLA has chosen both Mortgage Training Institute and National Lender Services as our preferred education providers.- If you DID qualify for exemption status in the steps above, you may sign up for the 19.5 hour class.
- If you DID NOT qualify for exemption status in the steps above, or you wish to take all 40 hours of training, you must sign up for the 40 hour class.
- BOTH class types are offered ONLINE and IN PERSON.
